“The Verses That I Made For You”

Florbela Espanca, one of Portugal’s finest poets who unfortunately only lived to be 36. This is probably my favorite poem of hers. Here is what it says:

The Verses That I Made For You

Let me say to you those rare, beautiful verses
That my mouth has to say!
They are carved in marble from Paros
Shaped by me to offer to you.

They feel like expensive velvet,
They are like burning, pale silks.
Let me say to you those rare, beautiful verses
That were made to drive you crazy!

But, my love, I am not telling you anything yet…
A woman’s mouth is always beautiful
When inside she guards a silent verse!

I love you so! Yet I have never kissed you…
And in this kiss that I have not given you, my love,
I guard the beautiful verses I made for you.
