Henri Rutten

Work In Progress

On 13 August 1904, Henri Rutten was murdered at his mission post in what is now Papua New Guinea. He was in his early 30s and far, far away from home. Born and raised in Tilburg in the south of the Netherlands, he was my mother’s great-uncle. Long dead before she came into this life, he was still a regular topic of discussion over tea or coffee at my grandmother’s house.

I am currently in the process of  translating his life story into English. Because of what happened to him and the “adventure” he undertook as a missionary at such a young age, all of the letters he sent to his parents and to the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart have been kept. So there is a lot of information available. Unfortunately, it is all in Dutch (if you happen to be able to read that, have a look here for more information). Henri Rutten also has some descendants here in Australia and in Canada, so I thought it would be an interesting project to take on as well as helping those relatives to learn something about their family tree. (I learnt a thing or two myself, too.)

So keep an eye on this website, because soon enough you will be able to read all about it too!
